WHAT DO THIN-CRUST PIZZAS, INDIAN SAMOSAS AND KOBE BEEF HAVE IN COMMON ?
All Will be Sold in Boston Area Restaurants Designed by Donald Lang Architects
West Newton, MA (May 24, 2004)... Restaurant design specialists Donald Lang Architects (DLA), today announced the completion of architectural work for CROMA, a white tablecloth pizzeria slated to open next week in Boston’s historic Back Bay neighborhood.
Working in conjunction with Cafco Construction and CROMA corporate designers in Italy, DLA converted two separate Back Bay restaurant spaces (formerly Davio's and Upstairs at Davio's) into a bi-level European style bistro, with an outdoor dining patio.
The Back Bay Architectural Commission lauded DLA principal Donald Lang and his associates for "exceptional work" restoring this significant building to "its former glory."
The facade, fronting the city’s trendy Newbury Street shopping area, received a major overhaul. Aluminum bays, windows and arches added in the 70s were replaced with brownstone sills, ironwork and mahogany casement windows - inspired by the original 1870's Flemish gable facade. DLA interfaced with several city commissions to gain approval of a handicap access plan for the building.
Other foodservice projects completed/underway by DLA: Eurostove, Commodore Plaza, Beverly, MA (opened April 2004)
Retail space for high-end European cooking appliances and accessories, plus a fully equipped demonstration kitchen where professional chefs will conduct hands-on cooking classes with equipment by Aga, Diva, AEG, Kupper Bush and Miele.
Tamarind Bay, 75 Winthrop Street, Cambridge, MA
In a cozy subterranean space in Harvard Square, operated for 30 years as Casa Mexico, an Indian bistro grows. DLA is overseeing the gutting and refurbishment of the bistro, adding enhanced lighting and furnishings, and the color scheme of colonial India.
Tokyo Steakhouse, Route 16, Wellesley Lower Falls, MA
This Japanese, teppanaki-style restaurant will be located on the second floor of the new Wellesley Center, a block-long commercial/office complex. DLA is architect of record for the complex, and will design the steak house, too. Work will begin in Spring 2005.
